It’s day 11 and we’re taking a trip across the Welsh border to listen to the girl choristers at Llandaff Cathedral sing Creator of the stars of night in an arrangement by John Scott and directed by Stephen Moore.
As with all choirs, the pandemic has been a challenging time for the choristers of Llandaff Cathedral. A gradual return to singing from late 2020 onwards culminated in a return to full duties – six services a week – from the start of the Autumn term 2021. The choristers have acquitted themselves extremely well under changing COVID procedures and the rebuilding of repertoire and confidence continues, as evidenced in today’s wonderful recording!
The choir is moving towards a big change which will come into force from September 2022 onwards. A careful plan has been drawn up between the Cathedral Chapter and the Governors of the Cathedral School to provide equal opportunity for girls and boys to be choristers. There will be parity of duties and, consequently, recognition and opportunity for the 40 choristers that sing at the Cathedral.
Alongside its cathedral choirs the music department also currently encompasses a Voluntary Choir, Junior Choir and Parish Choir. Aaron Shilson has recently taken up the newly created post of Assistant Director of Music and can be seen accompanying the choir in today’s Advent Calendar offering.
