Lichfield Cathedral

Only two more days until Christmas, and we're in Staffordshire to visit the stunning three-spired Lichfield Cathedral. Today, Lichfield Cathedral's choristers sing a beautiful rendition of Silent Night for us.

There has been a traceable Choral Foundation at Lichfield Cathedral since 1315, when Bishop Walter de Langton first provided accommodation for the Lay Vicars Choral in Vicars Close.  This formal provision of Lay Vicars has over the years been expanded to include the posts of Director of Music, Organists, Choral Scholars, the Headteacher of the Cathedral School and both Boy and Girl Choristers as part of the Foundation plus an enormous singing outreach programme, MusicShare, involving local schools.

In addition to the Cathedral choir, Lichfield has an impressive number of amateur choirs, offering singing opportunities to people of all ages: mini voices, young voices and youth voices for young singers from birth up to the age of 18, and Ladies Who Lark, the Cathedral Chamber Choir and Cathedral Chorus for adults.

The Cathedral choir's musical repertoire is wide-ranging, from ancient plainsong to brand-new commissions.  They are often accompanied by the playing of the fine Hill organ, and more occasionally by orchestral groups, and even drums and bass guitar at termly MusicShare concerts with diocesan schools.

The Cathedral will be hosting Choral Workshops for boys and girls aged 6-10 years on Saturday 22nd January 2022. To book your place on this or to sign up for our next round of Choral Auditions, which will take place on Saturday 5th February 2022, please call 01543 306168 or email [email protected]
