It’s day 7 of our Advent Calendar and today we are at Derby Cathedral to hear the choir sing Advent Calendar by Philip Ledger.

Derby Cathedral Choir is a very vibrant part of the musical life of the city and county, and their ever-growing reputation for excellence spreads far and wide.  Alongside the Cathedral Choir, Derby Cathedral offers opportunities to local children through the Junior Choir, and a recently established programme of Choral Outreach.

"Derby Cathedral seeks to nurture and encourage a parity in education and inclusivity, and the Choir knits together choristers from a variety of backgrounds, allowing them to form a closely-bonded team"

Director of Music, Alexander Binns

We were very pleased to be able to support Derby Cathedral Choir with a grant in 2021 to help expand their chorister vocal training programme and enable a more personalised musical education for all choristers.

Alongside singing five choral services each week, the Cathedral Choir undertakes various other projects, tours and trips both within the UK and abroad (recent trips include Belgium, France and Italy); CD recordings and BBC broadcasts; and concerts and performances with international artists, including the Sixteen, John Rutter, Alexander L’Estrange, Jethro Tull and Sinfonia Viva. Former choristers have gone on to a whole range of different careers but those that have chosen music now hold posts at Christ Church Oxford, Leicester Cathedral, Portsmouth Cathedral, Westminster School and the London Oratory.

Choristers interested in joining the Cathedral Choir should contact the Director of Music, Alexander Binns at [email protected] or 07760 766199.
