New Trustees appointed

11 December 2020

Cathedral Music Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of two new trustees to the board. Appointed following an extensive recruitment process conducted in partnership with Nurole, Jonathan Macdonald will head up the Development Committee, whilst Gavin Ralston will be chair of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Jonathan Macdonald joins the Cathedral Music Trust with over 35 years of international experience in financial services. He was a chorister and organist at school and subsequently went to Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Music and acted as organ scholar. A career in the banking industry followed, which took him to New York, Paris, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi. Jonathan continues to enjoy playing the piano and visiting cathedrals and churches whenever he gets a chance.

Jonathan said: ‘As Chair of the Development Committee I look forward to supporting the Trust as it seeks to significantly broaden its reach and impact as a voice for cathedral music, and provide much needed support for our cathedral, college chapel and major church choirs across the UK.’

With many years’ experience in asset management under his belt, Gavin Ralston is currently Head of the Strategic Client Group at Schroders. Gavin’s love of cathedral music started in the late 1970s whilst studying for a Classics degree at University College, Oxford, but blossomed much later thanks to a nine-year term as a lay Chapter member at St Paul’s Cathedral. He remains closely associated with St Paul’s in a number of formal roles as well as a worshipper.

Gavin said: ‘Thanks to my time at St Paul’s Cathedral, I am very aware of the need for an organisation like the Cathedral Music Trust. I look forward to working closely with Trustees, colleagues and volunteers to ensure we have robust measures in place to provide effective support for this extraordinary musical tradition.’

Cathedral Music Trust’s Chairman Peter Allwood said: ‘We are delighted to be welcoming Jonathan and Gavin to the Board of Cathedral Music Trust. Both will bring a wealth of experience to these important roles and it is very encouraging to see that the new Trust  is already attracting such high-quality trustees.
