C is for…Coventry

“Advent is the best part of the year. It makes us excited for Christmas.”

Coventry Cathedral Girls' ChoirSo said a chorister at Coventry Cathedral. Today, 3 December, in Coventry, the Girls’ Choir is busy rehearsing Aston in G for Thursday’s Evensong, as well as all the music coming up for Advent and Christmas. Later this evening, a smaller group of choristers are singing some carols for a Wine Society event in the cathedral and, on Saturday, two choristers will be performing ‘Walking in the Air’ at a showing of the film The Snowman with a live orchestra.

The boys are looking forward to singing in the BBC Coventry and Warwickshire carol service, which will be broadcast live on local radio.

Boys and girls are gearing up for Coventry’s unique Christmas Eve service, Form of a Servant, which features many carols, hymns and readings and ends in quiet stillness.

One chorister said,

“I’m very excited to sing ‘God is with us’, by Tavener.”

Another chorister said, “I love ‘Light in our Darkness’ and ‘Form of a Servant’ because of the beautiful music such as Adam Lay Ybounden by Boris Ord. There is always a wonderful, almost magical atmosphere at these two Festivals. And, of course, not forgetting the anticipation of who will get to sing the Once in Royal solo!”

The choristers told us,

“If you miss Christmas, you’ve basically missed the best part of what the choir does.”

So, if you are in the Coventry area, be sure to get along to one of their many Advent services.

Since 2016, Friends of Cathedral Music has been delighted to support Coventry Cathedral with funds to train new-entrant choristers provided by a small grant-making trust. In 2019 the trust decided to renew the grant for a further four years.

By donating to FCM, you, too, can help support choristers like these at Coventry Cathedral.
